Top of the table clash on Sunday

05 Jan 2023

The Botswana Premier League (BPL) returns this weekend from the festive season break, and all eyes will be on the top of the table clash between log leaders, Gaborone United and second placed Jwaneng Galaxy FC at the National Stadium on January 8.

Apart from the fact that both teams have been the best performing in the league so far, the game has all the ingredients of a mouthwatering clash in the fact that Galaxy will be coming all out for revenge after Moya Goleele collected six points from them in the last league campaign, a trend that Galaxy will be willing to halt.

GU on the other hand will go into the game knowing that a loss will mean losing the leadership position to Galaxy. GU has so far accumulated 25 points from nine games while Galaxy are just two points behind from as many games.

Both teams have been flying high since the league started. They are the only teams in the league to concede defeat.

Moya Goleele has the advantage of a solid defence as they have only conceded a single goal the whole campaign, which came against arch-town rivals, Township Rollers in their 1-1 draw.

The game is the only one that GU failed to collect maximum points, and they will be hoping that their defence, marshalled by the likes of Kennedy Amutenya, Tshepo Maikano and Alford Velaphi will continue to be solid at the back.
GU will however, have to be wary of Galaxy as it has some sharp players upfront in the likes of Thabang Sesinyi and Namibian winger, Wendell Rudath who has netted seven goals so far, just one goal shy of top goal scorer, Omaatla Kebatho of Orapa United.

Meanwhile the fixtures open on January 7 with Extension Gunners hosting Masitaoka at Lobatse sports complex under the floodlights, while Orapa United will welcome rookies, Eleven Angels at Itekeng stadium.
Police XI will host Security System at Otse Police College while BDF XI welcomes Sua Flamingoes at VTM Arena.

Township Rollers will be hoping to keep the heat on the top three teams when it welcomes Prisons XI at Molepolole sports complex. All the games start at 4pm except the fixture between Gunners and Masitaoka which starts at 7pm.

On January 8, Nico United welcomes Holy Ghost at the Sam Sono stadium in Selebi Phikwe while Mogoditshane Fighters will play host to Morupule Wanderers at Molepolole sports complex.
All the January 8 games start at 4pm. Ends.
