19 Dec 2022

Horse race fanatics were treated to pomp and fanfare during a race event that attracted multitudes over the weekend in Sekhutlane, located 20 kilometres from Mabule.

The event, which has grown in leaps and bounds and is no longer a Sekhutlane affair, now attracts jockeys and fans from as far as Kgalagadi.

Initially, the event acted as pass time for residents during weekends and public holidays.

Sekhutlane Village Development Committee chairperson, Buti Maoto, said in an interview that this year’s event was a success thanks to the P10 000 sponsorship by Kopo Mononi that went towards prize money. In addition, Maoto said the event had become a money spinner for small business who sold food and drinks.

Also, Maoto stated that the VDC, which sold stalls to business people and tickets was the greatest beneficiary.

Mary Kebontse, who bought a stall, concurred that the event was a cash cow for small businesses.

The fact that Sekhutlane did not have shopping complexes, according to her, was a blessing in disguise.

Another business operator, Obakeng Moepi, said other than bringing in money, the race promoted social cohesion and presented early Christmas for the residents.

During the final, Pius Oil belonging to Thourough Breed horse stable got position one walking away with P1 800, while the second position went to Groovie News and in the process got P1 500 cash prize.
