Stage set for BoBA national championships
05 Dec 2022
It will be a moment to behold when Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) holds national championships on Saturday.
The mouth-watering championships will be subsequent to an explosive weekend of quarterfinal and semi-final action hosted at the University of Botswana student centre.
The finals, which draw boxers who participated in the BoBA sanctioned interclub tournaments, will close the boxing calendar.
After an emphatic victory against Kennedy Sebekedi in the semi-finals, national team boxer, Rajab Mohamed, set a tricky date in the finals with the enterprising Joel Kgogobi of BMC Boxing Club.
The latter was impressive in the interclub tournaments and would likely give Mohamed a run for his money.
In what turned out to be the shocking results of the day, former national team boxer, Kabo Seitshiro, produced a polished performance against the hard hitting Mmusi Tswiige of Prisons.
Tswiige fought to a bitter end as the five judges waved to EMG’s Seitshiro who marched to the finals to face off with Onalenna Sibanda of SSKB.
The semi-final loss to Seitshiro might be a worrying factor to Tswiige who is expected to take to the ring for his second professional bout in two weeks.
Another national team boxer who showed maturity and consistency in his two qualifying rounds was George Molwantwa.
The stocky BMC club’s sensation put five past Onalethata Motlhalaakgama to set a date with the equally gifted Gillian Ditshwene of Prisons.
Speaking on the side-lines of the semi-finals Sunday, BoBA publicity secretary, Moitshephi Nkabiti, expressed dismay at the level of participation of women boxers.
The quarterfinal and semi-final matches resulted in several walk overs because of lack of opponents for some women boxers.
The finals will see Commonwealth bronze medallist Lethabo Modukanele face Masego Morwaakgomo of Molepolole in the women’s 50kg division. Dolly Mosekiemang will take on Phekei Bele of Francistown.
Osadi Matong of Glenvalley will lie in wait for Tricier Thipe of SSKB while Chatiwa Isaac will take on Joyce Moilwa in the 81kg division. ENDS
