Tsabong SVM marathon impressive

31 Oct 2022

Over 100 runners participated in the Botswana Sports Volunteer Movement (SVM) 10km fun marathon in Tsabong on Saturday.

The marathon attracted both professional and amateur runners. Tsabong SVM liason person, Kgotlaetsi Moube, said he was impressed by the attendance, despite the scorching heat.

“It was our first ever event where 103 people participated from Tsabong. We did not anticipate such a number since this is our first instalment and it was a success,” he said.

He said they would engage more stakeholders going forward and that plans were underway to organise a competitive event next year where contestants would win prizes.

The fun marathon, which was held under the theme: Fighting non communicable diseases through sports #Botsogojwane, was intended to drum up support for the competitive marathon slated for October 2023.

The event, which included aerobics, non-communicable diseases screening, HIV testing, BOCAIP, Tebelopele and Lefoko foundation, was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth, Gender, Sport and Culture (MYSC).

In an interview, MYSC Kgalagadi District coordinator, Moeti Godisamang said they offered logistical support, engaged stakeholders, advertised the event and procured refreshments.

Godisamang said the marathon was important for the public to fight non communicable diseases. He said being fit encouraged wellness in the workplace, boosted productivity and improved general health.

Galefele Solomon said the marathon was a welcome development which was  good for health.  “I clocked 01:48:27 seconds and the pace was very good. My average pace was 9.51 and I burnt 330 calories according to the health app,” she said.

However, she said she wanted to go beyond 10 km. “I wish this could be held every month, it is a fantastic development,” she exclaimed.

Kgalagadi District commissioner, Bigboy Mangwa, who was amongst the participants, said the marathon was well attended, especially by women and youth.

“I wish we could host more of such activities to improve our health and encourage those lagging behind,” he said. Ends
