Its Charma Gal time

27 Oct 2022

The Charmians, as scores of Charma Gal fans are known in music circles, are waiting with bated breath to see if the musical prodigy will finally be crowned Kgosi Ya Mosadi, come Saturday night.

The much awaited music concert styled Kgosi Ya Mosadi will take centre stage as a celebration of the songstress’ musical journey that spans a little over two decades.

Born Magdeline Lesolebe, Charma Gal also plans to make history by becoming the first  Motswana woman artiste to fill the National Stadium to the brim.

She recently added curry to the flavour by announcing Congolese superstar, Koffi Olomide, as the main supporting act.

In an interview, Charma Gal said should everything fall into place, she would be hosting the concert annually.

The Sekuta hitmaker said part of the concert’s proceeds would go into assisting members of the families of her late band members who perished in a road crash.

The accident remains one of the low moments of her musical journey and she plans to erect tombstones in their memories.

Charma Gal could not hide her excitement by sharing the stage with undoubtedly one of the continents’ lavish music artists who goes by a plethora of names among them, Mopao Mokonzi which loosely translates to The Big Boss.

Charma Gal’s demeanor and reputation on stage also speaks volumes and having listened to some of Olomide’s music and seen his classy act, performing alongside him is a dream come true.

She has built a faithful fan base in the southern part of Africa and enjoys massive airplay as far as Malawi.

She is expected to be joined on stage by Culture Spears. The group laid the foundation for her music journey.

They released a debut album called Korone in 2005 and hit the studio again two years later for a sophomore album that broke international records, Kulenyana.

Charma Gal took a detour for another project and scored equal success even after a break from Culture Spears.

She ventured into a solo project and delivered, among other hits, Sekuta and Mokolodi.

Han C, MMP Family, Jeff Matheatau, Khoisan, Mlesho, Anafiki, Solly Sebotso, Kganka among other local greats will spice up the already charged up evening.

Hot on the heels of his electrifying performance at the Independence Stadium in Namibia last weekend, Olomide will make his next stop at the National Stadium in Gaborone.

Much thrill and excitement was added by the special appearance of Namibian President Hage Geingob at Olomide’s show in Windhoek.

Confirming his appearance in Gaborone, Olomide posted a video shared on social media that he could not wait to perform in Botswana, making it his second bite of the cherry after a sold out performance at the leafy Blue Tree Gardens in 2005.

Olomide’s performance at the Kgosi Ya Mosadi event is part of his tour to celebrate life and legend that he is.

He has countless accolades to his impressive musical record having dropped off his first album in 1983, but his music and dance moves still resonate with the current generation as evidenced by the popular Papa Mobimba dance.

Back in his own country, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the 66-year-old Olomide was recently adorned the country’s culture ambassador by President Felix Tshisekedi in recognition of his work.

Congolese rhumba was officially added to the UNESCO heritage list last year December. Working with him would offer local artistes opportunity to explore higher grounds.

Outside music, Olomide graduated from Marseille University with a Bachelor’s degree in business economics and is also a holder of a Masters degree in Mathematics from the University of Paris.

He is a multi-award winning artiste and founder of his backing band Quartier Latin International Orchestra and has over 30 albums to his credit.

His 2001 album Effrakata received four awards in one night at the glitzy Kora Awards in South Africa.

From Botswan, Olomide is expected to visit the Comoros before undertaking his American tour next month. Ends
