23 Oct 2022

The new Gaborone City Regional Football Association chairperson, Thapelo Mothusi, has promised to solicit sponsors for the league and take women’s football to greater heights.

In an interview after winning elections during the region’s elective congress on Saturday, Mothusi said he was happy that delegates still had confidence in him after serving the region as vice chairperson.

Mothusi beat Phetogo Tsheko 32-17. He said his committee would ensure that they serve with distinction, guided by good governance.

Mothusi said he would spend the next four years focusing on grassroots development and organising more competitions to give youth an opportunity to improve their skills and techniques.

“We will also ensure that we organise more competitions for them, besides the normal league competition,” stated Mothusi, who also mentioned that women football should have prize money after completing the league.

He said it was disappointing that leagues in the region did not have prize money, a trend he said would be corrected.

“Take for instance, Holy Ghost won First Division South Championships and was promoted to Premier League but did not have prize money for their hard work. So brace yourselves for a competition like Top 8 in the region,” stated Mothusi.

Meanwhile, Chaboneka Siwawa was unopposed for the position of treasurer, Tapaphiwa Gaebolae and Wedu Motswetla were elected additional members by 39 and 30 delegates respectively, while Mpho Rankae lost with 22.

The position of vice chairperson, secretary, vice secretary were not filled because no candidate submitted their names.

For those, Mothusi said they would co-opt capable members to fill and also stated that they would need a legal mind among them to advice on legal matters. Ends
