BNSC reinstates Horse Society

Botswana National Sport Commission (BNSC) has reinstated Horse Society of Botswana (HSB) after a two-year suspension.
The society was suspended in November 2020 due to leadership crisis that had thrown the body into disarray.
BNSC CEO, Tuelo Serufho, confirmed the reinstatement of HSB, adding they were happy to have them back given their importance to some of Botswana’s ambitions.
“Equestrian sport disciplines are not only part of the programme of the Olympic Games, we also know that horse racing is a big money spinner and has great tourism potential,” he said
Serufho said the return of HSB should allow the society to continue exploring ways of improving the sport for the benefit of Botswana.
The issues at HSC snowballed even to the extent of reaching the courts of law, however, HSB recently elected Sean Hughes as president.
“We look forward to once again holding events under the auspices of the FEI, the international federation and seeing our members represent Botswana in regional and international competitions.
We thank BNSC for their support through this process. We also thank all of the hardworking members who have worked towards this goal for the last two years.” he said.
Hughes said the newly elected committee composed of eight members was chosen during the society’s annual general assembly in August.
The committee, he said, would be in office for one year, adding it was a strong committee poised of members with extensive experience in the horse industry, civil society and private sector, with geographical representation from across the country.
Furthermore, he said the committee intended to implement governance best practices, including the principles of transparency and reporting.
“We have embarked on projects to develop and improve policies and procedures in line with global best practices adapted to our society,” he said. ENDS
