Rakgare wants return of school sport

11 Oct 2022

Ministry of Youth, Sport, Gender and Culture is working round the clock to ensure school sports activities resume early next year.

Minister Tumiso Rakgare said this during a tour of Jackalas II mini stadium recently.

He said school activities involved other ministries and stakeholders, something that he said posed a challenge.

“Unions represent teachers’ welfare issue and teachers are in charge of sporting activities at schools,” he said.

He said government harboured the ambition to engage retired sports professionals to work alongside teachers to unearth talent.

Elite athletes, according to Rakgare, had requisite skills and knowledge.

Talks to engage such personnel in future were at an early stage.

That withstanding, Rakgare expressed concern that lack of sporting activities at schools had gone on for well over two years.

“This is of great concern because children do not go to school for academics only but they also have the right to play and it is a right the ministry must provide,” he said, adding other than promoting the wellbeing of pupils, sporting activities were a source of employment. ENDS
