Quartet slug it out in tourney

Four women football teams will battle it out in the Zac Construction Cream of Gaborone tournament billed for Lekidi on Saturday.

Through the one-day tourney, Double Action, Gaborone United, Mexican Girls, and Prisons XI will test their new signees’.

The tournament coordinator, Owe Mmolawa, said in an interview that a draw conducted on Monday had pitted Gaborone United against Prisons X1 for the first game while Double Action and Mexican Girls’ encounter would follow later.

He said he was confident that the tournament would restore the spirit of competitiveness amongst the teams.

“Start of the women’s league is approaching, so we need to get them ready for competition,,” he said.

He said position one would attract P7 000, gold medals and a trophy, position two; P4 000 and silver medals, while number three would be rewarded with P2 500.

In addition, he said there would be a P2 000 appearance fee for every team and refreshment subsidy of P1 500.

Furthermore, Mmolawa said the top goal scorer, goalkeeper and young player of the tournament would each pocket P1 000, while player of the tournament would be rewarded with P2 000.

During a recent appreciation brunch for the senior women football national team, President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi challenged Botswana Football Association to establish structures to develop and govern women’s football league with similar impetus afforded to the men’s league, if not better.

He also urged the business community to assist the BFA, BNSC and government in putting more financial assistance in women’s football.

“I have no hesitation in declaring that the future of African football resides largely on women’s football for it is a pristine territory,” he said. ENDS
