Basubia celebrate Veekuhane Cultural Festival

22 Sep 2022

Come September 24, Basubia groups from Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe will ascend in Kavimba for the  highly celebrated  Cisiya Nkulu.

At the annual festival, otherwise known as Veekuhane Cultural Festival, the ethnic group members interact and showcase their culture in the form of food, dance and attire.

In an interview, Cisiya Nkulu Trust board chairperson, Tedius Yambwa said the festival also accorded munitenge (kgosikgolo) an opportunity to interact with his subjects because according to the Subia culture, he was seen in public only once a year.

Yambwa noted that since the Basubia had installed their kgosikgolo or munitenge in December last year, this year’s festival was themed: Veekuhane Under the New Munitengeship, the Journey Continues.

Munitenge Liswaani Sinvula III was installed in December, taking over from his father Munitenge Maiba Sinvula, who reigned for 53 years.

The annual festival started in 2009 with the aim of fostering community participation and self-development.

Yambwa said the festival would help with entrepreneurship growth as those interested in selling their products would pitch stalls.

Funds raised from the leasing of stalls, he said, would be used to prepare for the next festival.

Build-up activities for the festival kicked off with a sensitisation walk from Mabele to Kavimba as well as live exhibitions and visits to historical places at Munga.

The annual festival is one of the trust’s activities, which included the documentation of the Subia cultural heritage for its  preservation for future generations. Ends
