20 Sep 2022

Botswana Tertiary Students Sports Association (BOTESSA) will send two rugby teams to the University Sport Association South Africa (USSA) Rugby 7s tournament scheduled for Kimberly, South Africa, from Friday Septemer 23.

The three-day tournament will be held at Sol Plaatje University.

Vice secretary of BOTESSA, Botho Thobega, said they partnered with Botswana Rugby Union to select match fit players across Botswana universities.

She also noted that selected players had been participating in league games and were fit to battle for the title.

The team will face Rhodes University and WSU while the men will battle UCT, Rhodes University and NWU.

The vice secretary said the tourney was a result of the bilateral proposals that the two countries made to the International University Sports Federation (FISU) to host development programmes on rugby and marathon running.

Thobega noted that both countries had been given about P65 000 each by FISU to host the rugby and marathon programmes.

She said Botswana would organise a marathon race in Maun next month while South Africa has organised the rugby tournament.

Thobega said USSA would also send their athletes to partake in the marathon.

She said prior to the games there would be a training workshop for BOTESSA rugby officials facilitated by Rugby South Africa.  ENDS
