Botswana Boxing Association (BOBA) national team coach, Thebe Setlalekgosi, was impressed by his charges’ performance at the just-ended Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC) Championships in Mozambique.

Botswana sent a team of nine boxers, who won six medals; one gold, two silver and three bronze.

Keamogetse Kenosi won gold, Aratwa Kesemang and George Molwantwa won silver, while Kobamelo Molatlhegi, Lethabo Modukanele and Phekie Bele won bronze medals.

Setlalekgosi called for more resources to be channelled to the team for it to qualify for the next Olympics.

He said boxers, who competed at the championships, carried hope for the country.

“There is a lot of potential in these athletes, and all what I am saying is that the authorities should support them, to bring results to the country,” he said.

He said women pugilists outdid themselves given that they managed to outclass their male colleagues in the medals tally.

The team captain, Lethabo Modukanele said even though there were a few hiccups before they left for Mozambique, they managed to reach their medal target.

She said the athletes were mentally fatigued going into the tournament, given that they had a busy season, adding however that despite the challenges, they represented the country with pride.

“Some of our more experienced athletes did not do well, but it is part of the game,” she said. Ends
