Kanye residents have been urged to support the Kgosi Malope II marathon, which is scheduled for September 17.

 The marathon is one of the ongoing fundraising activities for the upcoming kgosi’s wedding ceremony and his 10 years coronation anniversary planned for September 24, October 4 and 5, respectively

The fundraising committee chairperson, Otlaadisa Koosaletse appealed to Bangwaketse to come on board and take part in the fundraising activities.

“We have previously hosted the Kgosi Malope Cultural Festival and a sponsored walk two weeks back, but attendance was not pleasing at all,” he said.

Koosaletse appealed to all, especially Bangwaketse, to register for the marathon and ensure funds were raised for the two upcoming events.

He promised marathon runners an enjoyable scenery as the route traverses the mountainous landscape of Kanye.

There will be the five kilometre, 10km and 21.1km races as well as the standard 42.2km one.

Koosaletse said the marathon was also held to celebrate and appreciate Kgosi Malope II’s achievements and milestones over his 10-year tenure as kgosi.

He added that there were milestones that were worth celebrating such as the re-introduction and revival of mephato and dikgafela. He noted the recent unveiling of the Maakathata regimen, which consists of men born between 1981 and 1985.

Koosaletse also said the activities would be followed by the wedding ceremony on September 24 at the groom’s place in Maseru, Lesotho, and in Kanye on October 7, followed by the 10 years enthronement anniversary celebrations on October 5.

Koosaletse acknowledged that Bangwaketse were registering their pledges and urged more to come forward.

“We have registered cattle, goats, sheep and chickens and we welcome those willing to lend a helping hand, be it individuals, clubs or companies,” he said.

In his welcome remarks, Kgosi Kebapetse Telekelo commended the committee for their efforts and encouraged them to continue working hard in ensuring that the two events became successful.

He noted that visitors would be descending on Kanye from across the country and outside. Each mophato is expected to contribute two beasts, he said.  ENDS
