Gaone Bathoeng (Botswana) and Flava Sehohle (South Africa) are BDF half marathon champions.
Bathoeng ran the 21.1 kilometres in 1:17:28 followed by Kitsiso Joseph with 1:19:20 while Kefilwe Galaitsiwe finished third in 1:25:47 in the women’s category.
In the men’s category, Sehohle registered 1:07:55 followed by Kenyan Albert Kangor in 1:07:55 while Dikgakgamatso Mosimanegape settled for position three with 1:08:01.
Bathoeng said she was happy to have won the race, adding it was a result of good preparations.
“I prepared very well for the race and the result did not come as a surprise to me.
The weather was favourable, the route was fine and generally I am happy,” she said.
For Sehohle it was a sweet victory considering the challenges he had encountered coming into the race.
He arrived in the country on Friday, could not find transport to take him to SSKB on race day and arrived one minute before the race with no time for a warm-up.
But during the race, he was a marvel to watch as he dominated from start to finish.
He said he enjoyed the race and that it was well organised with favourable weather conditions.
“This is my second win in Botswana in three weeks, I ran in Palapye and won the race and today I won the BDF half marathon,” he said.
Furthermore, he said he used the race to prepare for Barcelona in November.
“Taking part in this kind of races is what keeps me busy and they are part of training. All in all athletes from Botswana gave me competition,” he said.
The 10km women’s race was won by Bakha Boikhusto with 0:37.15.
Position two was held by Lesedinyana Tumelo also with 0:37.15 while Mema Tiango finished third with 0:39:47.
In the men’s category, Othusitse Gabolelwe finished first with 0:31:29 while Julius Monyeki and Zibani Batungamili finished with 0:32:03 and 0:33:59 respectively. ENDS
