Drad Boxing stable fighter, Steve Bagwasi, has won the World Boxing Federation (WBF) super featherweight title.
The title match was played at the University of Botswana Indoor Sport arena Friday night.
Small, as Bagwasi is fondly known, went toe-to-toe with the experienced Saidi Chino from Dar-es-Salaam.
At the end of the high octane action, Bagwasi said he enjoyed the match.
He praised his opponent for being such a classy endurance athlete.
“He did exactly what I expected!” quipped Bagwasi who draped his new belt after the fight.
Against Chino, Bagwasi looked well prepared, super fit and ready for action.
There was no slow start for the highly anticipated 12 rounder clash as both boxers went straight to work from the opening bell.
Bagwasi reproduced his past form and landed some clean shots but the Tanzanian adversary kept his guard intact and proved why he had an outstanding career.
Bagwasi landed with accuracy and scooped well deserved points through the first four rounds.
The fifth round was no different with heated exchanges from the start.
Bagwasi came back from the break with more fire power and threw a decent right to Chino’s face who went down for a standing 8 count.
From then on, Bagwasi threw a couple of combinations with his opponent on the back foot and clearly in trouble and unable to return fire.
Towards the end of the bout, both boxers oozed great stamina with Chino stepping up a gear with excellent work rate while Bagwasi remained aggressive.
In other entertaining bouts lined up for the night, Moabi Ngaka shared the spoils with Sanele Maduna of South Africa in the main 8 round supporting bout.
The talented Ngaka has been inactive since October last year when he defeated local rival onkarabile Mothibedi for the international super bantamweight belt. In another fight that ended in a draw, Cedrick Chauke squared against Boifang Kenaope.
An explosive battle ensued between professional boxing debutants, Lentswe Zwinila and local opponent Choga Ntoti with the latter claiming bragging rights after all judges waved to his corner.
National team boxer and former Zone IV champion Mmusi Tswiige also made his first cut into professional ranks and impressed against Siphiwe Ntombela of South Africa. ENDS
