With women’s football gaining momentum in Botswana, teams are this season running helter-skelter to poach and beef up their squads.
This might also have been propelled by the money pumped by Diamond Trading Company Botswana (DTCB) into the Women’s Football Top 8 tournament, where the winners pocket P25 000.
One player who is in high demand is Mexican Girls’ starlet Keitumetse ‘Ben 10’ Dithebe, a workaholic of note whom any team would like to have.
However, Mexican Girls director, Oaitse Moeti said her signature would not be for free and made it clear that any team looking for ‘Ben 10’ should pay a development fee of P150 000.
Moeti stated that FIFA statutes clearly indicate that a club looking to buy a player developed by another should pay $2 000 per year (P25 000) for the period the player was with the club.
“Even the Botswana Football Association play rules refer to FIFA statutes.
We have eight years with Ben 10, and the calculations are justified,” he said.
Moeti said as a team, they would not stand or deny any player an opportunity to go for greener pastures, adding that they would be guided by FIFA statutes when dealing with such matters.
“Mexican Girls was established 10 years ago, and Ben 10 has eight years with us.
I am trying to show you the energy that I used in developing this player to be where she is today,” he said.
Moeti said he would not be exploited after using her resources to develop players.
“To be honest we should all learn to taste the bitter roots of development and enjoy their sweet fruits later,” he said.
Mexican Girls is well known for producing quality players, among them Esalenna Galekhutle, who is now based in the US, Atang Busang and Segakolodi ‘Nunuberry’ Didukanyane. ENDS
