Tebogo out but not discouraged

Botswana's 100m runner, Letsile Tebogo, cherishes his World Championships experience, despite failure to make it to the final.

He said in an interview that he was happy to have shared the stage with reowned athletes.

The athlete said he was not under pressure, adding the atmosphere at the Hayward Filed was electrifying.

Tebogo, who will be heading to the World Junior Championships in Columbia early next month, said he would use the strategies he learnt in Oregon to make a mark at the junior champs.

Tebogo came seventh with a time of 10.17 in the 100m semi-final at the ongoing World Championships in Oregon, United States.  His main undoing was that he stumbled from the block and consequently failed to recover as the race progressed.

Jamaican Oblique Seville won the race with 9.90 followed by American Marvin Bracy with 9.93, while Canadian Aaron Brown came in position three with 10.06.

Tebogo, who did well in his heat where he finished on position one with a world junior record of 9.94, said his misfortune taught him that days were not the same. “What matters is that I have finished the race healthy,” he said.

Concerning the record he registered in the heat, Tebogo said he was over the moon.

“I know how Batswana wanted that record, so I had to once again do it for them. They have been very supportive and it was a way of saying thank you to them,” he said.

Former Botswana Athletics Association secretary, Patrick Moesi, said although Tebogo finished last in the semi final, he gave a good account of himself.

“If he had not stumbled at the start, indications are that anything could have happened. A little stumble or any foot wrong can create a big difference,” he said.

Moesi said Tebogo still had age on his side and should now focus on defending his 100m title at the upcoming U-20 World Championships.

However, Moesi said by setting the world junior record, Tebogo silenced those who might have had doubts on his previous record of 9:96 set on April 29, which was not ratified by World Athletics.

Former Botswana Athletics Association secretary said the athlete had an opportunity to break the record again in upcoming events. ends
