Debswana extends Boteti region sponsorship

11 Jul 2022

Debswana has renewed its sponsorship towards Boteti region women soccer league for a three-year period to the tune of P600 000.

This follows a request by Boteti Regional Football Association as the initial 2019 sponsorship of the same amount and period came to an end this year.

In 2019, Orapa, Letlhakane and Damtshaa Mines, unveiled P600 000 to sponsor the Boteti women soccer league for three years with a sponsorship of P200 000 a season.

Speaking at the new sponsorship launch, OLDM assistant general manager, Ditiro Lentswe said Debswana remained committed to sport development and would continue complementing government’s efforts of creating an opportunity for sportsmen and women to succeed.

“We consider ourselves an important investor in the Botswana sport landscape and we are committed to sport development. Our commitment in sport is to a large extent underpinned by our desire to be part of the transformation of this country into the great sporting giant that it has the potential to be,” he said.

Lentswe was also hopeful that the sponsorship would have great impact in nurturing talent as well as be a motivation to players.

Boteti Region Football Association, women’s league chairperson, Thusanang Moribame said the just ended season went well.

He highlighted that they started on time and managed to end the league within the stipulated time.

The chairperson also noted that they ran the league with minimal complaints and there were no protests.

Moribame noted that the league continued to grow, as next season three more teams would be joining the Boteti women soccer league, taking the number of teams ten.

The three teams that will be joining the league are Diamond Chiefs, White Stars and Orapa United.

BFA national executive committee member, Lobito Ncube commended Debswana for the sponsorship adding women football was expensive to run. She noted that women football in the country had tremendously grown, while lately it had received a lot of following.

Ncube highlighted that as sportswomen in Botswana, they had worked hard to be where they are today, citing an example of the participation of the national team at the ongoing Women’s Cup of Nations as a great achievement.

She said with the support and monetary sponsorship women soccer would grow more. ENDS
