Zebras start COSAFA battle

04 Jul 2022

A fierce battle is expected at the King Zwelithini Stadium in South Africa when the Zebras of Botswana come face-face with Pirates of Seychelles in a COSAFA cup clash today (2pm).

The Zebras are expected to have a youthful line up, but the experienced players, amongst them, Lebogang Ditsele and Thato Kebue, will keep the ship steady.  If FIFA rankings are anything to go by, the Zebras should have an upper hand, given that they are ranked 149, while Seychelles are at 195.

The two sides once met in COSAFA Cup in Zimbabwe and Zebras registered a 2-0 victory courtesy of Pontsho Moloi and Malepa Bolelang.

The Zebras coach, Mogomotsi Mpote, said his players knew the significance of winning their first game.

He said in an interview that preparations had been smooth, adding players were in good health and free from injuries.  “I am happy they adapted quickly. So I cannot complain, so far so good. We started our training this side on Sunday,” he said.

Mpote said the quick adaptation ahead of their crucial clash against Seychelles was great motivation.

He said in studying their opponents, they managed to identify their strength and weaknesses. Mpote said Seychelles were a good side, but the team would find the going tough against the Zebras.

“I think we have an upper hand against them and should we gel properly, we will bring desirable results,” he said.

Meanwhile, Zebras will play against the Comoros on Thursday and on Sunday they meet Angola.  ENDS
