Countdown to world title bout starts

Count down to the WBF lightweight world title bout scheduled for August 26 at University of Botswana Indoor Arena started this past Saturday in Gaborone.

The vacant title will feature Steven Bagwasi of Botswana and Said Chino of Madagascar.

The bout promoter, Thuso Khubamang, of Scud Missile Promotions, said the bout would be the biggest  to ever be hosted by the country.

He added that the activation events, which started at Ledumang on Saturday would be staged at various venues across the country.

He said other than stimulating the upcoming bout, the activities were also meant to take boxing to the community.

He described Bagwasi as a top flight boxer not only in the country, but also in the continent.

 He said Bagwasi signed with ESPN an American television promoting boxing in Africa and gets invited partake in their professional bouts across the continent.

Khubamang said it was every boxer’s dream to grow from open boxing level, commonly known as amateur boxing to professional level which was equally rewarding also.

He said the activation events will feature bouts including the main act, Bagwasi and all other professional boxers who will also be part of the event.

He said the activities will also have fun bouts including children as a way of raising the sport awareness from a young age.

He said a local based professional boxers featured for August event as the main supporting was the current Super Bantam Weight WBF Africa Moabi Ngaka against a South Africa opponent still to be announced.

 Khubamang appreciated support the event received from local companies and government.

 In an interview, Bagwasi said professional bouts were a sign of growth in his boxing career.

He said it was equaling rewarding and thus every boxer’s dream to become a professional fighter.

Though, his opponent remain a closed book, as they had never met before, Bagwasi said he was currently working hard and watching videos of his opponent previous fights.

Bagwasi, a two time Zone 4 champion (2015, 2016), SCAZA U-18 Champion (2012), has fought nine bouts, winning eight and losing one since becoming a professional boxer.

Among other accolades, Bagwasi was a finalist at All Africa Games (2015), Zone 4 Best Boxer (2016), four times national champion and also voted promising boxer of the year in 2012. ENDS
