08 Jun 2022

The inaugural DTCB Women’s Football Top 8 championship draw conducted on Tuesday placed Double Action (Gaborone) in Group A with Royal Fighters (Kgatleng), Orapa All Stars and Cub Sporting Club (Nhabe).

Group B is made up of Mexican Girls (Kweneng), Granada Ladies (Selebi Phikwe), Francistown United and Green Lovers Ladies (Central North).

The championship, which features league champions from different regions, will start tomorrow and end Sunday with the winner pocketing P25 000 and a trophy, P15 000 for position two while position three will walk away with P10 000.

Speaking at the draw, DTC Botswana representative, Kago Mmopi said the company injected over P2 million into women football league and grassroots training programme for three years.

He said the sponsorship was an indication of DTCB’s commitment to sport development.

“The first aim was to increase participation of women in sports which has been achieved successfully in the just ended league,” stated Mmopi.

Another objective, he said, was to promote gender equality, diversity and inclusivity, an aspiration also enshrined in the organisation’s sustainability strategic priority about supporting communities to create shared value.

Mmopi said the women’s league commenced ended in May and DTCB was proud to have witnessed high levels of professionalism and commitment across all teams as well as  match officials.

“We are therefore, confident that the Top 8 championship games will live up to expectations and showcase the remarkable talent we have in this country,” he said.

Botswana Football Association chief executive officer, Mfolo Mfolo, said the organisation believed that it was walking on the right path in women football development.

“Our intention is to continue walking in that path and very soon, you will be witnessing the fruits we reap. We normally say women football is a low hanging fruit and we trust that we are in the right direction,” he said. ENDs
