06 Jun 2022

Botswana held Tunisia to a nil draw in an AFCON qualifier at Obert Itani Chilume Stadium in Francistown on Sunday.

The Zebras stood their ground in a game that many anticipated the African giants to win with ease.

Mogomotsi ‘Teenage’ Mpote’s  charges left the visitors huffing and puffing with no goal on sight.

Signs of brilliance were evident in the Zebras game and raised hope that qualifying for AFCON might not be a farfetched dream

In a press briefing after the game, Mpote commended his boys for a splendid job.

He said the players displayed tenacity, determination, courage and discipline.

He stated that despite Botswana ranking lower than all teams in Group J, his players were not intimidated, hence the good performance.

He said the encounter started with  a slow pace, but Zebras gradually came into the game though there was a bit of aggressiveness from opponents.

He said the draw against Tunisia was a moral booster for the Zebras.

Mpote mentioned Alphad Velapi whom he said did a good job on the over hook managing cross balls to infiltrate Tunisia defense.

He also commended Zebras goal keeper, Goitseoone Phoko, for making brilliant saves.

For his part, Tunisia head coach, Jalel Kadri, said the Zebras gave them a good game.

He said they had numerous scoring chances, but failed to convert.

He also noted that the pitch was not easy for them as it was dry and they had to adjust.

All in all, Kadri said, Botswana gave Tunisia a good play and they were looking forward to win the next three games. ENDs
