Botswana Motorsport (BMS), in collaboration with Team Jwaneng, will this Saturday hold the fourth round of its off road challenge calendar event at Kaduwe farms.
Round one was held in Kopong, while rounds two and three were held at Khawa. This is a national event governed by the BMS and will count towards the national championship points.
In an interview, Team Jwaneng chairperson, Kago Mosekiemang indicated that they were expecting to host a successful event, looking at the fact that some motorsport enthusiasts in Jwaneng and even beyond had been calling for the event.
“It has been a while since we hosted a motorsport this side, and people have been pestering us to hold one, only that we were hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic, but now that the event is here we are expecting a lot of spectators,” he said.
Mosekiemang said they were expecting between 30-40 bikes, both two wheelers and quads as well as 10-15 vehicles.
“We are expecting four clubs being Team Jwaneng, Gaborone Motor Club, Orapa Motor Club and Okavango Motor Club from Maun, as well as some individuals,” he said.
Mosekiemang revealed that they would also hold a special race to honour one of their pioneering members, Ray Wheeler; who will be retiring and heading back to his native South Africa.
“The Wheelers have been instrumental in the formation and sustenance of Team Jwaneng, so it is only right that we give them a befitting farewell. We are expecting other veteran bikers of his generation such as Kevin Branch to come and bid him farewell in a short and special race,” he said.
Mosekiemang said they were also expecting the internationally renowned Ross Branch to make a guest appearance.
The event is a 200km race, which will comprise of a 30km route that the riders will loop seven times to make the total.
According to Mosekiemang, the nature of the route is such that it will, challenge even the most experienced of riders, due to its thick sand.
“We will also have a junior flat track for children from six to15 years because we want the event to be for the whole family,” he said.
He said that besides competing for points, the race will also serve to promote the sport not only locally, but abroad, with the aim of making motorsport an iconic sport of the future.
The starting point for the event will be at Kaduwe farms, 20 km from Jwaneng towards Sekoma, along the Trans-Kalahari Highway, and the first bike is expected to take off at 8am. ENDS
