Two national champions for world singles competition

Now that the world bowls calendar is back on track, Botswana is preparing to send two national champions to the world singles competition.

Bowls Botswana president, Kitso Robert, announced this on Saturday during an official opening ceremony of the 45th Botswana Bowling Association National Tournament in Orapa.

He encouraged other bowlers to learn from the senior national team and those who had participated in international tournaments.

He cited Marea Modutlwa as one bowler who had experienced international competition by taking part in in the World Singles Indoor Championships.

Orapa Bowling Club chairperson, Abel Sikwane, said bowling promoted fairness, courtesy and friendship, characters he hoped participants would play by during the tournament.

For his part, Bowls Botswana public relations officer, Regent Reid stated that Gaborone Bowling Club was the defending champion of the rose trophy however, explained that to determine the overall winner of the ongoing Bowling National Tournament, points from the both men and women’s teams would be combined.

Marea Modutlwa of Gaborone Bowling Club is the defending champion in the women’s singles and Edwin Nyoka of Orapa Bowling Club defends the men’s. Women’s defending pairs are Juliet Makoko and Lebogang Dikupe of Jwaneng team while men’s defending pairs are Andre Van Der Walt and Daihan Mahoomed.

National men’s trips defending champions are Jwaneng team and Elandri Collington’s team from Francistown are women’s national trips defending champions.

On the fours, women’s national defending champions is Marea Modutlwa and her team from Gaborone and on the men’s side under fours, Joshua Mothusa and his team from Jwaneng are the national defending champions.

Reid explained that the overall winner of the men’s and women’s singles qualify for the World Championships scheduled for November in Wellington, New Zealand, while the winners of the 2022 national champions would go for World Champions of Champs in 2023. The tournament started Saturday and ends May 28.

The leading teams for Saturday games on Section A w Orapa A had nine points, Section B Jwaneng B had nine points,

Men’s section A Orapa B had six points and Section B was Orapa A with six points. ENDS
