Race enters thrilling lap
22 May 2022
It will be all to play for in the Debswana First Division South league as the race for promotion to the elite league goes down to the wire.
Two games remain for all the teams in contention for the respectable pole position in the league log to show their fighting spirit.
Mmopane-based Holy Ghost remain perched at the summit of the log with 41 points and are kicking themselves hard after dropping maximum points against second placed Mochudi Centre Chiefs in a top of the table clash on Saturday afternoon. Chiefs won 1-0.
Despite falling to their closest rivals, Holy Ghost are at the top with Centre Chiefs two points shy of the sought after spot.
Mmankgodi giants, Black Forest, are nearer to the top and if they beat Union Flamingo Santos and Matebele in the remaining fixtures, they could be in contention for automatic promotion to the elite premier league.
Magosi as Chiefs are fondly known, have a tricky date with relegation bound Motaung Young Fighters and Red Sparks.
Magosi cannot afford to drop a single point, but will have to play cautiously against the likes of Young Fighters who shocked fourth placed Matebele over the weekend.
Matebele, Broadhurst United, Matebejana and Tlokweng United are in touching distance of finishing within the top four bracket of the league log.
They are also fighting tooth and nail to close the slim margin within the top eight bracket to earn maximum points to end up playing in the promotional play offs. The Saturday top of the table fixture had all the potential of being a title decider for Holy Ghost, but Chiefs looked hungrier of the two sides.
Adding to the thrill was a packed crowd of die-hard fans.
Ghost started the match like a house on fire playing attacking football and creating numerous chances, but failed to convert on the final third.
It was Chiefs who dominated the opening exchanges in the second half and were rightfully rewarded moments later when Khumoetsile Kufigwa rose above his marker to slot home a beauty of a header towards the hour mark.
The experienced Kufigwa combined with the youthful Oarabile Powe and Emmanuel Thabe to give the Holy Ghost rear guard a torrid time.
Kufigwa displayed good positional awareness and great composure in front of goal.
The home team fought back, but to a bitter end as the visitors collected the three points.
In other first division south league games played elsewhere Black Forest registered a 2-0 victory against Red Sparks, Mochudi Rovers beat Matebejana 2-1, Tlokweng United failed to make a comeback against Santos in the 1-2 loss while Broadhurst United and Taung shared the spoils. ENDS
