Vikings walkover Bears
09 May 2022
Both Vikings teams had a field day on Sunday, walloping Bears to wrap up the weekend’s games.
The men’s game saw both teams scoring a point each from the first inning up to the seventh.
Vikings, who managed to score three points in the eighth inning, sealed the game at 4-1.
The winning coach, Kealeboga Baraedi, said their tactics were more or less the same, hence they managed to score a point each, until he switched the play to a short game to give them a better angle.
He said they resorted to suicidal bunting, which he described as a huge piece to team’s offence and they opted for the push bunt where the hitter would square around early, drawing the defensive players especially when there was a runner on base.
Baraedi said when a suicide bunt was called by the third base coach, the role of the batter was to make contact with the ball no matter where the pitch was delivered, mainly to allow the runner at third base to break for home.
He said the tactic worked well for them as they managed to register three points, which enabled them to win the game.
He also stated that the bunting system worked well for them since his team was full of young players, mostly from the last Botswana Games competitions.
Baraedi said the tactic also worked for the women team as it also defeated Bears 3-1.
The losing coach, Simon Jautse, said his team was marred by injuries, which affected their training for the past three weeks.
He said both his teams lost their games due to concentration lapsess.
Jautse said they were in the process of rebuilding Bears since the team’s most experienced players were nearing retirement.
Bears men’s team redeemed themselves when they hammered Gideon Warriors 6-3.
In other games played on Friday; Bears women beat Dinare; 17-2, while Bears male team beat Dinare 4-3.
On Saturday, a total of five games were forfeited due to teams not showing up or with less numbers of players.
Gatalamotho men went away with free points when Gideon Warriors could not raise the allowed number to play.
Wells women also got free points against Dinare, while Wells men beat Dinare 4-1.
Police 9 women walked away with free points against Eagles, while their male team walloped Eagles 14-3. UB Giants women also got free points against Eagles ladies, who were said to be sitting for their examinations.
