International friendlies strengthen team

04 May 2022

The senior women football team; The Mares’ coach, Gaolethoo Nkutlwisang said they had two friendly games against the Copper Queens of Zambia recently.

Nkutlwisang said they used the games to try some combinations as they prepare for the Africa Women Cup of Nations to be hosted by Morocco in July.

The Mares lost the first game 0-1 and played to a one-all draw in the second game.

She said her girls had a lot of scoring opportunities, which they failed to convert, adding that they made a lot of mistakes in the first game, but came to the party in the second one.

Nkutlwisang said there was need to work on the players’ fitness as it was evident that as the games progressed, they showed signs of fatigue.

She said the friendly games helped her to come up with a strategy, especially for the two positions that had been frustrating her.

Botswana is in Group C together with defending champions Nigeria, Burundi and South Africa, which the coach said gave her an idea of how to prepare her team.

She said it was important for them to continue playing international friendlies to give the girls more exposure and confidence. ENDS
