South African entertainers Sun El Musician, Lemon and Herb together with Botswana’s finest DJs proved that Afro House music is still a force to reckon with.
Despite the invasion of new genres such as Amapiano sounds, the genre still appeals to music enthusiasts across ages.
This came to light at Gaborone International Convension Centre on Saturday when entertainers gave the revellers a taste of what to expect during the Gaborone International Music Concert (GIMC) main event scheduled for August.
The weekend do, dubbed Afrotech festival, proved that Afro House music, initially championed by the likes of Godfathers, has stood the test of time given the number the festivals.
The infused genre, now Afrotech, has made it more widespread, evidenced by the number of followers it appeals to.
“Afrotech sound is here to stay. It is an underground music which is much loved, and many genres such as Amapiano are fused and mixed into afrotech,” said producer and record label owner DJ Aimo.
Not to be outshined by the visiting DJs, DJ Aimo thrilled fans with his impressive mixes, dropping hits to keep music enthusiasts on toes.
He credited the crowd’s mood and appreciation for his blazing sets. Advising youngsters who admired the craft, particularly those in the Amapiano genre, DJ Aimo said the key was to keep honing their skills without being desperate for fame.
While acknowledging that it was not easy to breakthrough as an Afrotech DJ in Botswana, the turntables master said ‘with patience it is possible’.
The talented Mzansi duo Lemon and Herb put on a great show wowing their fans with familiar hits.
The duo has been on top of their game for a while, and they gained popularity in Botswana via the Lockdown House parties on DSTV’s Channel O, a move that witnessed their local fan base soar.
Sun-El Musician did not disappoint either, as he took his fans down memory lane with hit songs such as Sonini and Akanamali.
Sun-El Musician has also been around for a while and is one of those who have been instrumental to the growth of house music.
One of the revellers, Mamsy Boporo said given the success of activation shows GIMC organisers have held so far, there was no doubt about them pulling all strings during the main event.
She applauded the organiser Fish Pabalinga for catering for different personalities, a move that has given life to night life. “GIMC events are classy, the concepts are out of this world. The events are exciting given the different themes thrown at us. You have to think of what to wear and what to expect. I am looking forward to the main event,” said Boporo. ENDs
