The on-going volleyball tournament will conclude the preliminary stage over the weekend.

Botswana Volleyball Federation vice president technical, George Keotsene, said the tournament was supposed to conclude the preliminary stage the past weekend but due to weather challenges, some games could not be played. He said, as a result, the games had to be postponed to this coming weekend.

“The first two weekends of the preliminary stage went well. It was only last weekend that some of the games were abandoned due to weather challenges. The coming weekend was scheduled for quarterfinal matches but that stage will be moved to pave way for the remaining group stage fixtures,” said Keotsene.  

Kootsene said the weekend fixtures would be played at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks (SSKB) and Botswana Railways volleyball courts and would include three women’s matches and five men’s games.

In addition, Keotsene said despite the long break due to COVID-19, the teams’ performance was satisfactory and there were signs that the momentum was improving as the tournament heats up.

Kootsene was also impressed with the fact that almost all the teams were giving young players who were also new in the game a chance to prove their mettle.

“I am excited with what the teams are doing by giving young players an opportunity to play with veterans of the game to gain experience and sustain the quality standard of play,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the women’s category, Pool A is led by Police VI with 12 points followed by Mag Stimela with six points. In Pool B, Kutlwano leads the group with five points followed by Kalavango with three points.

As for the men’s side, BDF VI lead Pool A with nine points, followed by Yaros with six points. Pool B is led by Police VI with 12 points and Kutlwano occupies the second spot with nine points.

At the conclusion of the preliminary stage, 16 teams (eight women and eight men teams) will move on to the quarter-final stage. ENDS
