Joy Foundation, in partnership with Cycle4Life (C4L) Cycling club, will on Saturday host Kgatleng cycling day at The Home of Joy Foundation in Diphonchi, Mochudi to raise awareness on cancer prevention.
Themba Giddie of the C4L Cycling Club explained that the event would consist of a series of activities, amongst them, the Joy Foundation Cancer Mountain bike (MTB) cycling race.
“The event seeks to raise awareness on cancer, support survivors as well as remember the lives lost due to Cancer,” he said.
He said the route, which was mostly flat jeep tracks with some sandy areas would have a 60km distance as the main race while 30km and 15km races were for fun and family rides.
Giddie also advised that the race would start and end at Home of Joy Foundation at 6 am.
Founder of Joy Foundation, Joy Setshedi said the event aimed at encouraging the community to live healthier and more active lifestyles.
Setshedi said she was motivated to educate patients, family and the community about cancer and the health benefits that came with it.
“This year’s event is a free ride to all cyclists as we want to have more impact regarding Cancer awareness,” said.
Setshedi noted that their long-term plan was to grow the event into an international sports tourism activity, which they would use to raise funds for the Cancer Association and survivors.
“In previous events held in 2019 and 2020, we donated bicycles and gym equipment to Kgatleng DHMT and bicycles to four cancer survivors,” she said, adding that this year the beneficiaries would also be a cancer support group, Fighters Support Group.
Dignitaries expected to grace the event include Assistant Minister of Local Government and Rural Development also Member of Parliament for Kgatleng East Mabuse Pule, Kgosi Bana Sekai as well as Kgatleng District Council chairperson, Daniel Mokokwe. ENDS
