First division south heats up

23 Mar 2022

Debswana First Division South league enters week 14 this weekend with automatic promotion and the relegation axe being realities that teams are facing.

Teams, especially those at either end, are expected to hit top gear for either survival or elevation.

Log leaders, URI Black Forest  will lock horns with Taung Young Strikers at Befree Park.

On paper, Forest stand a better chance to win since their opponents are on a bad spell, sitting just three points above the relegation zone.

Black Forest will be hoping go get back to winning ways after being held to a one-all draw by Matebejana last weekend.

It will not be a surprise though, if Young Strikers give Forest a run for their money as they want to keep their chances of survival alive.

In the first round, Forest had the better of Young Strikers beating them 2-1.

In another fixture, a battle of ‘Matebele’ is expected at the SSG grounds when Matebejana of Mogoditshane meet Matebele of Oodi.

As if they are fighting for the ownership of the name, the two teams are ironically at 19 points each on the log standings with Matebele having a superior goal difference.

Meanwhile, Tlokweng United and Red Sparks will lock horns in the Tlokweng derby at VDC grounds, but the former are expected to ease home against their rivals as Red Sparks, just like their name suggest, are in the red zone, sitting one place from the bottom above Motaung Young Fighters.

Tlokweng United on the other hand, are having a good run as they are still counted among teams with a foot on the automatic promotion spot, with 23 points, which make them joint third together with Mochudi Centre Chiefs.

For their part, Chiefs will be hoping that their neighbours, Mochudi Rovers do them a favour by beating second placed Holy Ghost.

The former premier league aristocrats currently sit on third position on the log, with only two points separating them from Hoy Ghost and they know that a loss for Ghost and a win for them will now put the log leadership in sight. Chiefs will face UF Santos away in Gabane.

Holy Ghost are, however, also expected to put their foot on the acceleration pedal against a Rovers team that occupies position nine.

In the only game billed for Wednesday, Broadhurst United will lie in wait for Motaung Young Fighters.

In their first ever season in the first division, the Kang outfit has been having a tough initiation, having collected just three points in 13 games.

They are yet to taste victory in the league as all their points came from draws.

Motaung has also been leaking heavily at the back, having let in 44 goals in total against just a paltry eight scored and as things stand, the Kang lads are as good as relegated.

Broadhurst United will therefore be hoping to use the fixture to keep in touch with the top teams as they are currently on position five, with 22 points. ENDS
