Junior youth boxing tourney for Lobatse

23 Mar 2022

All roads lead to Lobatse on Saturday where Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) will host a junior and youth tourney.

The boxing extravaganza, billed for Peleng community hall, is expected to attract youth from different clubs across the country.

In an interview on Wednesday BoBA spokesperson, Moitshepi Nkabiti, said the tourney was one of the activities meant to bridge the gap created by the absence of school sports.

“We are expecting clubs from as far as Francistown, Selebi Phikwe, Gaborone and Molepolole to bring their young ones to this tournament,” he said.

Nkabiti said the association saw it fit to come up with such an initiative to keep the young boxers fit and active, saying ever since the COVID 19 pandemic outbreak, they never competed anywhere.

He said the tournament would afford boxers a chance to hone their skills ahead of the Region 5 competition.

He said the coaching team would have ample time to select best performers to represent the country at Region 5 in Malawi in December.

Nkabiti added that the weekend tourney was the first of many to be held.

The PRO said though they were not yet sure of the exact date of Region 5 games, they were confident that they would send a sound team to the Lilongwe meet.

He said the association therefore urged clubs to bring their young athletes to such kind of tournaments to ensure that deserving pugilists formed the national team.

Nkabiti said the Lobatse tournament would be targeting youth between the ages of 15-18, adding that no one would be allowed in the ring without a helmet.ENDS
