Sankoyo Bush Bucks defeated Maun Terrors 1-0 in a Debswana First Division North league game on Saturday.
Sankoyo’s goal keeper, Bothata ‘Slender’ Phetodi, scored the only goal of the Maun derby on the 74th minute through a penalty to earn the club bragging rights of the tourism town.
Sankoyo supporters beamed with pride for their team’s crucial victory since it was struggling to win games.
The victory moved Sankoyo to position four with 19 points in the in the log standings while Terrors remained at the bottom with eight points.
However, spectators who came in their droves expected sparks to fly, but that was not to be as both teams failed to play their normal football and never settled down in the first 20 minutes of the game.
Sankoyo struggled to create opportunities and was lucky to have been awarded a penalty after their striker, Niisa Dema who seemed to be causing trouble for Terrors was roughly tackled leaving referee with no option but to award a penalty.
Although the game heated towards the end of the first half, both teams ended the first half with no goal.
After recess, Terrors continued dominating the game and making numerous deliberate attacks on their opponents though their efforts were not rewarded.
But on one hand, their opponents retaliated making it difficult for Terrors to find its way to the goal post.
Terrors continued putting up a brave performance with many shots that were brilliantly hoarded by the Ngurungu goalkeeper.
Sankoyo brought in Dema on the 55th minute and he changed the tempo of the game through his quick runs hence a penalty which cemented the game.
The winning coach, Anthony Timothy, praised his boys for collecting maximum points to improve their position in the log standings.
The game, he said, was crucial since they were aiming to secure second spot at the end of the Frist Division North league.
Although the team was now 12 points behind the leaders, Nico United, Timothy was optimistic that his boys would work hard in the remaining ten games of the league.
“It is promising that we will get there. I am happy that my boys executed our plan very well as we wanted to block our opponents from penetrating our goalkeeper,” he added.
Timothy also appreciated Terrors efforts saying they came into the game to fight for survival.
Terrors head coach, Tzihani Kangangwani thanked his boys for putting a brave performance throughout the game saying they controlled the first half, but they were unfortunate as they failed to convert many chances created.
In the last part of the game, he said his boys lost concentration, hence causing a penalty that led to a goal.
Despite the loss, he sounded positive that his boys would survive relegation. Ends
