20 Mar 2022

Debswana has sponsored Botswana Boxing Association (BoBA) awards  with P250 000.

Launching the awards in Gaborone on Thursday, Debswana programme manager, Boikanyo Kgosi, said the April 9 awards would recognise excellence from both athletes and officials.

“The awards also enhance a positive attitude towards sports amongst the athletes and motivate them to be more competitive in the zonal, continental and international competitions,” said Kgosi.

Kgosi said, despite COVID-19 challenges,   Debswana stayed committed to sport development and the boxing awards ceremony was a demonstration of such commitment.

She said sports had proven its resilience during the pandemic, by surviving both operational and financial effects.

Debswana supported various sporting activities and organisations for decades.

It has also supported initiatives and organisations such as the Botswana National Sport Commission, Botswana Football Association, Botswana Athletics Association, Botswana Chess Federation, the Re Ba Bona Ha programme and the First Division football League as well as different national teams.

BoBA and Debswana relationship goes back more than 10 years and Kgosi said the two had enjoyed a strong relationship characterised by common interest and mutual respect. “This sponsorship launch re-affirms such a strong bond and this year’s Awards will be a celebration of our 10-year-old relationship,” she stated.

For his part, BoBA president, Gilbert Khunwane, applauded the commitment and support Debswana had shown.

He further applauded nominees and urged them to continue achieving brilliance in their boxing careers.

Khunwane also encouraged boxing administrators to continue working tirelessly in grooming and developing the personalities of the young talent in boxing. Ends
