Premier league title race hots up

15 Mar 2022

The Botswana Premier League title race is poised to go down the wire as the two log leaders dropped points in week 23.

With both Gaborone United and Township Rollers failing to collect maximum points over the weekend; it is the only way a title race of such unprecedented quality and relentlessness could be settled by going to the end with a gloriously rare final day that decides it all.

Log leaders, Gaborone  United,  had to come from behind to secure a point  during their one-all draw with Security Systems while second placed Township Rollers were held  to a  goalless draw by Orapa  United.

Week 23 results left GU still at the summit of the log with 54 points after 22  games with Rollers still hot  on their  tail, only a point  adrift though they have played  a  game more than their  city rivals.

Both teams have yet to bear any real sign of weakness in their campaign thus far, but GU have to constantly look over their shoulder and hope for some inconsistency in the Rollers camp, who at the same time seem to be finding their rhyme after starting the league on a low note.

Popa, as Rollers are affectionately called, seem to have an abundance of game breakers and X-factor players and it would be surprising if they do not  push GU all the  way to the final game.

While the battle for premiership honors may be getting all the limelight and headlines heading into the final stretch of the league campaign, there is still plenty of suspense at the other end of the table as the relegation dogfight is also intensifying.

The relegation trap door seems to have already closed on Gilports Lions who are occupying spot 16 with 12 points  from 23 encounters.

Gilports’ fate in the premier league seems to be all sealed having only managed two victories in the entire season thus far.

With Gilport already looking condemned to the first division come next seasons, it is up the trio of Notwane, Mogoditshane Fighters and Mahalapye Railyways  Highlanders to fight tooth and nail and avoid the  dusty first division.

Going in to the first round break, Notwane were safely occupying mid-table of the league but a dreadful run of results has put them in a worrying position with inconsistency been their downfall.

Notwane and Fighters  have their  destiny at  their own hands with 16 points  each while  Highlanders have  15 points. ENDS
