Duo ready for bowls champs

14 Mar 2022

Botswana will participate at the Bowls Indoor Championships in England from April 25 to 29.

Marea Modutlwa of Gaborone Bowls Club (GBC) and Remmy Kebapetse of Jwaneng Bowls Club (JBC) will represent the country.

Botswana Bowling Association president, Kitso Robert, announced this after a two-day Francistown bowling major tournament over the weekend.

Robert said the duo qualified for the showpiece by virtue of winning the 2021 December play-offs.

The two will play singles before joining forces to participate in a mixed pairs discipline.

Robert called on other bowlers to rally behind the two so that they fly the Botswana flag high.

He also thanked bowling association members for contributing towards the trip expenses.

For their part, the two promised to work hard to bring medals to the country.

Remmy said because that would be their first indoor game, they would have to leave earlier to acclimatise with the facility.

Meanwhile, Orapa Bowls Club (OBC) Team A defended its title as it was crowned the champions of the mixed pairs.

The team included Kaizer Geche, Tshenolo Moshokwo, Sticks Sikwane and Fred Kelatwang.

The team played three rounds with the first two rounds played on Saturday and the last round on Sunday.

Orapa won all rounds to attain maximum points.

Geche said after they did well in their first game, they never looked back.

Second position and third went to Orapa Team B and the hosts, Francistown Bowls Club’s Team C.

Orapa Team B comprised of Kitso Robert, Eddie Nyoka, Judy Baleseng and Boago Galebowe.

Orapa Team B’s Robert, who could not hide his excitement, said on paper his team was weaker than others, but they managed to perform exceptionally well due to practice.

“We practiced a lot and we played our club singles competitions before the tournament,” he added.

He said individually they were not the best of the bowlers, but working hard as a team produced good results.

Robert was thankful for the attendance and the growing numbers of younger players in bowling, saying he was happy that perception that the sport was for the elderly, was changing.

The two-day tournament recorded a full house with over 40 bowlers from five teams filling up the greens. Ends
