Women in Sport Botswana re-looks at strategy
06 Mar 2022
Aligning Women in Sport Botswana (WASBO) mission with Botswana National Sports Commission (BNSC) is imperative in ensuring gender equity in sport.
WASBO chairperson, Matlho Kgosi, said this at their ordinary general assembly and strategy review on Saturday.
She said due to the challenges of failing to gather due to COVID 19, they resorted to using digital platforms, although they were not as effective due to technical glitches sometimes. “Since we met two years ago at the pitso, we decided to meet today in one room, talk, plan and evaluate where we are, realign and also have an insight of where the new Botswana National Sports Commission board want to take us,” she said. She said given that WASBO’s role was gender equity in sport, their mission should be aligned with their mother body’s to attain the desired results.
WASBO secretary general, Keenese Katisenge-Tizhani, said she was happy that at least 13 sport associations had formed their women’s commission.
She said Botswana National Olympic Committee had recently formed gender commission.
WASBO intended to work closely together with BNOC gender commission on special mandate of equity, equality, retention, attraction and as well as safe environment for women and girls to participate in sport.
“We are taking a health approach towards advocacy, to ensure that when we empower, we do not leave a boy child and men to make them appreciate that they equally have a role to play when it comes to equality.”
Katisenge-Tizhani said it was important for the boy child and men to be sensitized that equality did not concern women alone.
