GU cement position

02 Mar 2022

Gaborone United cemented their position in Botswana Premier League log standings after defeating Extension Gunners 2-0 in Lobatse on Tuesday.

United remained at the summit of the log with 50 points followed by Township Rollers with 46 while Gunners are eighth with 31 points.

Gunners’ loss was not only detrimental to their log standings, but a blow to their fans who expected an upset.

The encounter started on a high note with both sides throwing missiles at each other to the excitement of their fans.

It seemed like breaking the deadlock would never come to pass as no goal was scored at recess.

Gunners players seemed drained as the game got older thus making them vsusceptible to opponents’ attack.

To ease the tension ,Gaborone United’s marksman, Mpho Kgaswane, broke the ice on the 47th minute with an incredible pile driver that gave Gunners goal minder, Isaac Moyo no chance.

The goal seemed to have a push on GU camp and silencing the opponents’ fans who had been chanting their team’s slogan.

Four minutes later GU’s utility player, Onkabetse Makganthai, added salt to an injury to Guna Gguna by increasing the tally to two with a banana swerve that left Moyo thoroughly beaten w

The bringing in of Brendon Kenosi for Baokeditswe Talane in the dying minutes of the second stanza did not bear fruit for Gunners whereas GU brought in Misani Thupa for Makganthai.

In a post-match interview, GU coach, Innocent Morapedi, said they moved away from a notion that it was never easy to play Gunners in their home ground.

He said his charges were playing marvelously to prevent their opponents from causing an upset.

Morapedi said their plan was to draw in the first half and win in the second adding that it worked for them, pointing that his boys’ response to instructions enabled them to pocket the needed points.

He said he was content with the two-goal victory.

Gunners coach, Wame Mokoke, said he was impressed with his boys especially in the first half, noting that they were tactical and showed some resistance.

He said they did well to absorb pressure in the first half as opponents tried to outshine them.

Mokoke said, due to a defensive blander in the second half, they conceded a goal that psychologically affected his charges.

He said his boys tried all they could, but lady luck was not on their side.

He said it was a good show given that his team was playing title contenders. ENDs
