Popa keep title hopes alive

Township Rollers kept their title hopes alive with a 2-1 victory against Notwane during the Gaborone derby at the National Stadium, Saturday.
The hype, thrill and build-up of the game ended almost as quickly as it had begun as Simisane Mathumo took Rollers into the lead as early as the second minute of the game.
Destabilized by their opponents’ first score early in the game, Notwane looked panicky and almost went two goals down on the 10th minute following Bame Morwalela’s well taken shot that left Notwane’s keeper Bophelo Kealeboga well beat.
Following contest pressure on their opponents in pursuit of a second goal, Motsholetsi Sikele solidified Rollers lead on the 79th minute from a well worked team goal.
Substitute, Aobakwe Tshobo pulled one back for Notwane, but it was too little too late.
With 46 points accumulated from 20 games, Rollers are only a point behind Gaborone United, who similarly increased their points tally to 47 following a hard fought 1-0 victory against Mogoditsane Fighters at the Royal Aria stadium in Tlokweng on Saturday.
It is worth noting that Gaborone United have the advantage of having played a game less than Rollers.
However, as the usual football cliché goes, it is back to drawing boards for Notwane who will have to dig deep in the remaining fixtures if they are to turn their fortunes around and make a dramatic comeback to avoid been relegated to the dusty first division.
In another double header game, played at the national stadium, Extension Gunners continued their rich vein of form with a 1-0 victory against the relegation threatened Gilport Lions.
Baokeditswe Talane stepped up to convert from the penalty spot to solidify Gunners position in the top eight of the league.
Following a good run in their recent games, the Peleng side are currently comfortably occupying the eighth position in the log with 31 points.
In other BTC league games played on Saturday, Security Systems won 3-2 against Orapa United, while Masitaoka and Mahalapye Highlanders played to a goalless draw, and Prisons XI registered their first win in six games, narrowly edging out Police XI with a 1-0 score line. ENDs
