SebinaMasunga Road project progresses well
28 Jan 2013
The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mr Nonofo Molefhi has expressed optimism that the P84 million refurbishment project for Sebina/Masunga Road was progressing well.
Speaking in an interview after tour of the project over the weekend, the minister said the road, which was due for re-construction, was delayed due to financial constraints.
He explained that at the time the tender was awarded, it did not include construction of culverts and one way bridges but as refurbishment progressed, it was realised that the road would be dangerous for users, as it would be wide but with narrow culverts and bridges. As such, a proposal to the Public Procurement and Asset Disposal Board (PPADB) was made to cater for culverts.
Since the contractor was already on site having started doing the project, Minister Molefhi explained that it was for that reason that the construction of culverts was not tendered for. He said they negotiated with the same contractor to include the work as a way of cutting costs.
Mr Molefhi further highlighted that although the inclusion of culverts was going to affect refurbishment progress, its impact would be minimal and further explained that they were willing to compromise with the contractor despite the 12 months construction period.
He nonetheless noted that there was a challenge for the contractor as black cotton soil was discovered along Vukwi where the road passed but said they had already engaged experts to analyse its impact. ENDS
