Government supports young people

27 Feb 2022

President Dr Mokgweetsi Masisi has reiterated government’s support to young people to enable them harness their talent in sports.

President Masisi said this in Gaborone on Thursday during a courtesy call by Scud Missiles promoter, Thuso Khubamang, who is the host of the World Boxing Federation (WBF) super featherweight title fight scheduled for August.

Khubamang was accompanied by two boxers from Drad Boxing Club, Moabi Ngaka and Steven Bagwasi who will be part of the competition.

Ngaka will be defending his Africa super bantam weight title while Bagwasi will be challenging the world junior lightweight title.

“The WBF world championships, being the biggest boxing event to be held in Botswana, will not only bring attention and focus to the country but an opportunity to unearth talent,”Dr Masisi said.

He applauded Scud Missiles Promotions for hosting the competition and noted that the event was of great importance to boxers.

He implored coaches and the Botswana Boxing Association to rope in women to create balance.

Dr Masisi further encouraged boxers to display appropriate discipline and adopt healthy lifestyles for the success of their sporting career.

Khubamang said Bagwasi earned his spot after winning his ESPN fights in South Africa recently. He said the competition had only been held in South Africa and Democratic Republic of Congo, adding that Botswana would be the third African country to host a boxing event of such magnitude. ENDs
