Lebopo targets pro peloton

03 Feb 2022

The lack of African cyclists in the professional peloton has been evident for so long, that’s why most riders are losing interest in competitive events.

Obstacles facing aspiring professional riders often border on lack of sponsorship deals, lack of competitive racing opportunities at home as well as the competitive gap riders faced if they made it to the pro peloton.

But all these hindrances did not discourage Under 23 champion, Lebopo Mompe whose dream was to make it in the pro peloton.

The 20-year-old Tsela Riders Cycling club member recently left for Australia where he will pursue a Bachelor of Business and Commerce studies as well as his cycling career.

Australia has a great level of competitiveness in cycling and this is a perfect opportunity for Lebopo as he is resolute on turning around his cycling career.

“I am keen on approaching local teams to establish if my goals align with theirs,” he said in an interview, adding that he would do more training with the assistance of a coach to ride up to the level matching the locals.

He also noted that joining a cycling club will give him the professional experience he needs.

Lebopo said whilst in Australia, he would continue to consistently participate and compete in races.

“Nothing is going to swerve me from achieving my goals,” he noted. ENDS
