GU aim to consolidate lead
17 Jan 2022
Seven re-arranged fixtures of Botswana Premier League will be played today at different stadia as the first round of the league draws to an end.
In one of the stand-out encounters, Gaborone United (GU) will be aiming to consolidate their grip on first position when they welcome Morupule Wanderers to the Royal Aria Stadium in Tlokweng.
The Reds are in a scintillating form and have opened a six points lead after accumulating 33 points from 12 matches.
They clobbered Jwaneng Galaxy 5-1 on Saturday to make it six wins in a row.
With an array of attacking talent such as Thatayaone ‘Messi’ Kgamanyane, Kekaetswe ‘Mara’ Moloi, Mpho Kgaswane, Obonwe Maome, Misani Thupa and Thero Setsile supported by the excellent
Lebogang Ditsele in midfield, goals are not in short supply for GU. Coach Innocent Morapedi’s boys are therefore favourites for another victory. However, Wanderers will be buoyed by the fact that they beat GU 1-0 in the last match between the two teams in December 2019. Coach Daniel Nare’s boys will therefore be aiming to repeat that feat and end the Reds winning run.
Wanderers are unbeaten in their last three matches. However, they were held to a 2-2 draw by Prisons XI on Saturday.
Their goals were scored by Boipelo Oaitse and Thobo Seeleko. Oaitse will also be looking to haunt his former team having spent three seasons at GU earlier in his career.
Wanderers are currently on position seven with 20 points from 12 matches.
In another stand-out fixture, Mahalapye Railway Highlanders welcome Mogoditshane Fighters to Serowe Sports Complex. The two teams will fight tooth and nail for three points to improve their chances of dodging relegation.
Highlanders are at the bottom of the log with three points from 13 matches while Fighters are above them with five points from 11 matches.
Highlanders, under coach Blessing Moyo, are still hunting for their first win of the season having lost 10 and drawn three matches.
They recently signed a number of new players such as midfielder Emmanuel Sekwena from Masitaoka, Mompati Oabile from Morupule Wanderers, Ontebanye Xaa from Sankoyo Bush Bucks and ex-Gunners player Bofelo Tatoetsile.
In other matches, Jwaneng Galaxy coach, Morena Ramoreboli, will be looking for an immediate response from his boys after the humiliation against GU when they take on Orapa United at Iteekng Stadium.
Township Rollers will be looking to consolidate their recent revival under French born coach Romain Falz when they visit Prisons XI at Otse Police Stadium while Masitaoka will aim to end their recent slump when they welcome high-flying Sua Flamingoes to the VTM Stadium.
Extension Gunners will lock horns with Police XI in Lobatse while Notwane face Security Systems at Lekidi East Ground. All matches will kick-off at 4pm. ENDS
