Gaborone United (GU) humiliated defending champions, Jwaneng Galaxy, 5 - 1 in a premier league fixture at Galaxy Stadium on Saturday.
The Reds dominated from the opening minutes until the end of the game much to the delight of their supporters who came in large numbers.
Songs from Galaxy’s supporters failed to motivate their team.
The hosts looked lost as the visitors built from the back with clear and accurate passes as well as creating more scoring opportunities.
In the 25th minute, GU’s Lebogang Ditsele scored the first, which seemed to motivat his team mates.
The game went for half time with GU leading by two goals after Keaketswe ‘Mara’ Moloi scored the second goal in the 41st minute.
In the 53rd minute, Galaxy was awarded a penalty, which Gilbert Baruti scored giving them their only goal of the game.
However, that did not demoralise GU players as five minutes later, Mpho Kgaswane solidified their lead by scoring the third goal.
Misani Thupa increased GU’s tally in the 67th minute while Omphile Ramoagi scored the fifth goal just before the final whistle.
In a post-match interview, Galaxy’s coach, Morena Ramoreboli, said they conceded goals because of poor defense and failure to attack well.
“GU capitalised on our mistakes and punished us. We trained on how to fight back when we lose the ball but we failed to implement that during the game,” stated Ramoreboli.
He a said they lacked bravery, arrogance and aggressiveness, which worked for them in the past games.
Ramoreboli said there was no need to cry for spilt milk, adding that they just had to go back to the drawing board.
For his part, GU assistant coach, Pontsho Moloi attributed their victory to hard work and discipline.
“This is team effort, everyone is willing to go an extra mile, work hard and smart,” he said.
He indicated that they prepared for matches as they come with the hope that at the end of the season they would have accumulated enough points.
Moloi thanked their supporters for always being there in large numbers to motivate players.
He said good results were due to collective effort from players, technical staff and management as well as the supporters.
“We all need to pull together,” he said. ends
