Chobe Charity Cup will help identify talents, project organiser, Moalosi Chaikwa has said.

Speaking during launch of the cup in Kasane recently, Chaikwa said the tourney would also contribute to economic diversification in Chobe.

He said the football tournament was aimed at promoting sports tourism within Chobe District.

He said football was the biggest marketing tool worldwide and because of sports tourism, the economy of Chobe would be rejuvenated.

“The project is for charity aspect, which is to give back to the community but in this case we are giving young people an opportunity to showcase their talents,’’ said Chaikwa.

He said their aim was to sell players outside the country.

Furthermore, he said they were working with former senior football national team captain, who is also brand ambassador of Chobe Charity Cup, Mompati Thuma.

In an interview, Thuma said he was happy to be part of the project.

He promised players that he was going to fight with everything that he had to bring sponsors and football scouts to Chobe District.

He urged players to train hard since this was the right platform for them to show the world their capabilities.

The former BDF IX captain also urged parents to register their children so that they could participate in the tournament.

Olerilwe Modise, who plays for Mazuzwe Terrors Football Club in Satau, encouraged players to work hard during the tournament.

Modise said the charity cup would bring the right people to recognise their talents.

Ezekiel Samunzala of Palm Legends football club also said he was happy and ready to play in this cup.

The launch was also attended by Thabiso Khunwane of BDF 1X.

The trophy was taken to other villages including Parakarungu and Satau where it was unveiled to elders of the villages including Chobe District Council chairperson, Amos Mabuku, who was grateful for the project saying it would keep Chobe in the map since there were no other good tournaments in the  region.

Mabuku assured players that more sponsors would come on board and the tournament would be successful.

The trophy unveiling is expected to be taken to other villages including Pandamatenga and the tournament will be played during Easter Holidays. ENDS
