South Africa’s legendary kwaito maestros Mdu Masilela and Alaska, backed up by local acts in the likes of Dj Laura, Dj Lefatshe and Exodus, thrilled crowds at Notwane Lifestyle Club over the weekend.
Kwaito fans were taken back to glory days of entertainment when Mdu ‘UncleBae’ also known as Chomi ya Bana during his prime days, dished out his legendary smash hits from the 1990s which gave him the title of Godfather of Kwaito.
The now grey haired Mdu thrilled the stage with Tsiki Yo, Mandoza’s 50/50, Mazola, MyBankBook, Sabela and Chomi Ya Bana.
Alaska duo, Thabo Tsotetsi and Sphiwe Picat were the highlight of the evening as they reminded the crowd of the dancing skills they were known for back in the days.
The two, who are formerly from a five member group and now in their 50s danced the night away with energetic formational choreographed Pantsula moves to the beat of their hits such as Accused, Woshi, Tse Ntswembo and Tse Blind.
Picat and Tsotetsi had to keep the legacy of Alaska alive after two of their members Lucky Mlakana and Andrew Moloisane left the group while the other member Les Maada passed on in 2014.
On how their genre can remain competitive against the likes of newbie Amapiano genre, the Kwaito legends Mdu and Alaska noted that Amapiano was not a threat to the Kwaito movement but rather an evolution and inspiration from kwaito music.
“Music is universal and broad,” stated Mdu explaining that Amapiano genre was an upgrade of Kwaito.
He said Kwaito was the foundation of other genres, and the industry would continue to see more of facelifts.
The show attracted mostly mature revellers with a few of young generation, attesting that indeed Kwaito music appeals to the young and the old. ENDS
