Gaborone United advanced to semifinals of Orange FA Cup with a 1-0 win over Police XI at Royal Aria Stadium in Tlokweng on Saturday.
After cagey exchanges, Kekaetswe ‘Mara’ Moloi of GU aka Moyagoleele converted with a beautiful header a well-executed cross by Alford Velaphi in the 40th minute.
The teams went into recess with the visitors holding tight to their lead.
Both sides returned from the dressing room recharged, but could not find the back of the net. In the end, Moloi’s goal proved enough to earn GU a place in the last four of the competition.
In a post-match interview, GU head coach, Innocent Morapedi, said ‘t was a difficult match as per our expectations. Cup matches are always difficult, but I am happy that in the end we got a win. The only worry is that we continue to miss chances,” he added.
Despite guarding their lead, Morapedi was concerned that there were points during the match when his team went flat, thereby giving the opponent a breather.
Meanwhile, Police XI coach, Maitumelo Letlaamoreng, said, ‘our plan was to contain GU for the first 45 minutes, but that did not work because we conceded a silly goal towards the break. In the second half, we played well because we made some substitutions,” said Letlaamoreng.
Despite the cup exit, Letlaamoreng could not fault his players for the loss.
He said they gave it their all.
“If it is not your day, it is not your day,” he said.
In the other games, Jwaneng Galaxy walloped Notwane 4-1, while Masitaoka beat Debswana first division side, Calendar Stars 3-1. ends
