Sehithwa-Mohembo road needs reconstruction

27 Aug 2020

Okavango Sub-District council chairperson Mr Mpoke Karapo says there is need for an urgent reconstruction of the dilapidated Sehithwa-Mohembo road.

Speaking during a tour of the road recently, Mr Karapo said patching of potholes was  not effective as the road had reached its life span, hence the need for a completely new road.

“This road was constructed over 20 years ago, it is now dead and it needs to be reconstructed. The road is even now affecting the economic growth of Okavango people. Lives have also been lost due to road accidents resulting from the road’s bad state,” he said.

Furthermore, Mr Karapo said it was frustrating that the Sehithwa-Mohembo road was not included in the National Development Plan 11.

However, Okavango sub-district deputy district commissioner, Mr Thabang Waloka said it was undisputable that the road was in a bad state, hence routine activities for the financial year 2020/21 had been warranted a provision of about P91.6m for out sourcing of works.

Such he said included overlaying of Nokaneng-Gumare road at the tune of P53.5m an ongoing project.

Mr Waloka also noted that tenders for projects such as pothole patching of Habu turn off-Mohembo road would be opened on September 9.

Other projects that will be opened for tendering include dry grading, maintenance of sand cushioning layer and spot improvement of Mohembo-Gudigwa road, Qurube-Nxaunxau road, Qangwa-Dobe-Nxainxai road and vegetation control at Habu turn off-Mohembo. ends
