Ministry warns of acid spillage

The public is advised to be cautious about acid spillage at Ngwasha gate, 50km from Nata towards Kasane.
A press release from the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources Conservation and Tourism indicates that a tanker ferrying the acid was from Durban, South Africa destined for Kamotho in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The spillage of sulphuric acid (98 per cent concentrate) was as a result of a pipe bust.
The press release indicates that the truck has a holding capacity of 30 000 litters and it has been leaking since January 10, 2020.
The spillage poses risks of material corrosion and toxicity if ingested by game, especially elephants and people living around the area.
The transporter as the custodian of the acid has been issued with administrative duties to rehabilitate the site.
Furthermore, another truck has been located for transferring the remeinder of ther acid. Ends
