South East District tells unique story

05 Jan 2020

South East District has a unique story to tell, despite being viewed or perceived as one of the smallest districts in the country.

While South East is supposed to be a bucolic area, its proximity to Gaborone is influencing the region’s inhabitants’ way of life.

The district comprises of big villages in Ramotswa and Tlokweng, located between the towns of Lobatse and Gaborone.

The district hosts one of the country’s trade centres in the Kgale area. Among the notable places is the Game City Mall, situated in close proximity to Kgale Hill.

Being one of the largest and busiest retail malls in the country, the mall offers ample choice of fashion outlets, restaurants, coffee shops, anchor stores, a cinema and a games room.

Opened in 2002, the mall is one of the first retails in the country and continues to attract hundreds of shoppers daily.

Apart from the mall, there are numerous commercial places and industries in the Kgale area and commerce park, which spice the district outlook.

Apart from the Kgale commerce area, the district has reputable companies such as Bolux Milling and Senn Foods household brands.

For those in need of leisure or break away from the noisy hurries of the city or village lifestyle boredom, the district could be an easy option given the Mokolodi Nature Reserve.

The Mokolodi Nature Reserve is a private not-for-profit game reserve founded in 1994 by The Mokolodi Wildlife Foundation.

About 10 kilometers from Gaborone, the reserve is now home to a wide variety of animals and plants and is also common for game drives, conferencing and brush braais among others.

Other than that, South East has the country’s sole water park in Lion Park and Animal Park, mostly notable the lions.

Notable for water park, it also offers conferring and joy rides activities such as the thrilling and highly rated sprawling kwazi roller-coaster.

Other attractions at the park include that of the amusement rides and swimming, which caters for both the young and old.

Three senior schools the district boasts of are St Joseph’s College, Kagiso Senior Secondary School and Moeding College.

Although all the schools are in the Ramotswa constituency, Kagiso and St Joseph College are Catholic mission schools.

The schools performance have been a contrast over the years as St Joseph’s college has constantly been topping the country while others have been battling to rid themselves of a tag of non-performing schools.

The schools catchment area is, however, not limited to their periphery.

Apart from being closer to Gaborone, the capital city was named after Kgosi Gaborone of Batlokwa.

Among the landmarks in the district is the Boatle Interchange which came as a component of the upgrading of the Gaborone – Boatle road into a dual carriage way.

The interchange, which is the first to be constructed in the southern part of the country is already in full use.

Another interchange construction is currently underway at Kgale junction which will add to diversifying the district road infrastructure.

Another landmark of the district is the Lentswe la Baratani situated at Otse as well as Otse hill, which literature suggest is the country’s highest above sea level followed by Baratani Hill and then Tsodilo Hill. ENDS
